The American Immigration Lawyers Association
Attorneys who join the American Immigration Lawyers Association (A.I.L.A.) are interested in fighting for justice and due process for detained immigrants. Supported by membership dues, this national association was organized to promote liberalized immigration and improve immigration law.
As stated on its official website, A.I.L.A.’s mission is to: “Promote justice, advocate for fair and reasonable immigration law and policy, advance the quality of immigration and nationality law and practice, and enhance the professional development of its members.”
What is AILA?
Based on the idea that noncitizens improve the economy of the United States, the American Immigration Council (A.I.C.) became a subsidiary of AILA in 1988. It is a research and advocacy organization that promotes legal immigration and expands the legal status of certain undocumented migrants by engaging in strategic lawsuits. Its primary objectives include:
Obtaining faster hearings for detained asylum seekers.
Producing promotional documents
Sponsoring foreign applicants for U.S. internships and job training.
An AILA Lawyer Represents Businesses and Families
Each AILA lawyer’s mission is to teach immigration law and provide information, new tools, opportunities, and professional services through its 39 chapters and national committees. In addition to U.S. businesses opting for noncitizen workers and citizens seeking permanent resident status for their close relatives, AILA member attorneys represent athletes, entertainers, international students, and asylum seekers. This service is often provided pro bono.
With headquarters in Washington, D.C., the American Immigration Lawyers Association has frequently criticized President Barack Obama and President Donald Trump’s administrations for their immigration policies. It has been especially critical of policies that involved the use of family detention centers for housing Central Americans wishing to claim U.S. refugee status. AILA lawyers have actively provided such migrants with legal assistance on a pro bono basis.
